The Ngong road forest sanctuary, one of the few forests in the world that exists within a city gets a Kshs. 2 Million grant from the Tourism Trust Fund, the funding arm of the Ministry of Tourism.
“The proximity of the Ngong Forest to the city, and indeed, to the largest informal settlement in Nairobi, makes the forest extremely vulnerable to deforestation, human encroachment and indeed pollution. Aware of this, the Trustees of the forest sanctuary have accepted to manage, on behalf of the government, this public land using a new dynamic model of community environmental management of resources.  This model resonates with the United Nation’s blue print for the environment, namely, Agenda 21. ,” said Mrs Kambuni, TTF Chairperson, as she presented the Kshs.2 million cheque to the sanctuary.
TTF acting CEO Mr. Sammy Kibet said that the grant will be used by the management to facilitate the completion of a picnic site, a mini nature trail, toilets, water connection and storage tanks as well as lighting provision and signage.
The Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary comprises an urban forest of over 500 hectares within the Nairobi City boundaries.  It is a forest rich in biodiversity and is home to over 120 bird species, over 35 mammals etc.
The Sanctuary’s overall goal is to protect in perpetuity, the forest’s natural environment through wise conservation management and to create a self-sustaining and multi functional reserve, which will serve the social, educational and economic needs of the surrounding communities.
Present to receive the cheque were Mr. Nigel Sandys-Lumsdaike, Chairman Ngong forest sanctuary and Mr. Mike Davidson, Trustee, Ngong forest sanctuary,

The launch of the project is scheduled to take place next month when it will be made open to the public.
