June 23rd 2008 was a significant day for Mt. Kenya Tourist Circuit Association (MKTCA) as it received funding of Ksh 9,210,000 to boost to their activities by TTF.MKTCA currently has four branches: Nyeri-Karatina, Embu-Kerugoya, Meru-Nyambene, and Nanyuki-Naro Moru-Timau.
The cheque and vehicle presentation was graced by the Minister of Tourism Hon. Najib Balala as well as the Minister for Gender and Children Affairs, Hon. Esther Murugi Mathenge, MP Nyeri Town.
1. Brief background.
The proprietor of the sanctuary- Kitale Nature Conservancy- Mr. Boniface Ndura, purchased the farm 20 years ago, and allowed it to regenerate back to its original state of bush, revering forest, acacia woodland for conservation and aesthetic purposes. The nature reserve and education centre was started in 1996, so that students can learn about the natural history of wildlife, plant ecology, and river geography.
2. Project Purpose / Objectives.
The overall goal of the projects is for the restoration and conservation of the natural biodiversity of the region for recreational and education purposes, as well as revenue generation to ensure profitability and sustainability of the sanctuary.
3. Proposed activities.
· Construction of a restaurant.
· Construction of a gate complex.
· Waste disposer and water system.
· Furnishings and fittings.
· Marketing.
4. Expected outputs
· Efficient management of an outstanding wetland ecosystem for biodiversity conservation, recreation and social utility.
· Minimization of environmental pollution trees through safe waste disposal systems.
· Enhancement of the conservation of indigenous and medicinal trees through professional management of the botanical garden.
· Provision of leisure and recreational facilities to locals and visitors to Kitale town.
5. Profile of promoters
The owner / Manager of the Sanctuary is a qualified teacher, with a passion for nature. He has demonstrated his entrepreneurial skills by developing the largest low cost private school in Kitale town which has more than 1,000 pupils. He is currently the Secretary and founder member of MENOWECTO, an ecotourism promotion company formed to promote tourism in Western and Northern Kenya.
