TTF SUPPORTS REGIONAL TOURISM ASSOCIATIONS

June 23rd 2008 was a significant day for Mt. Kenya Tourist Circuit Association (MKTCA) as it received funding of Ksh 9,210,000 to boost to their activities by TTF.MKTCA currently has four branches: Nyeri-Karatina, Embu-Kerugoya, Meru-Nyambene, and Nanyuki-Naro Moru-Timau.
The cheque and vehicle presentation was graced by the Minister of Tourism Hon. Najib Balala as well as the Minister for Gender and Children Affairs, Hon. Esther Murugi Mathenge, MP Nyeri Town.

1. Brief background.

· The proposal was found to address the diversification objective of TTF, as a venture that offers a totally different offering from the traditional wildlife and beach safari products.

 

· The venture was also found to be consistent with the proposed overall plan for the development of the Tana Basin tourism plan, with the proposed development of the Masinga Lodge, as a water sports tourism facility.

Current Status.

1. The Applicant undertook an IEE on the project site, which indicated that probably impacts may include soil, surface and ground water pollution, noise, public health and waste disposal. The study also indicated that these negative impacts identified are not so severe to stop the project from proceeding once mitigative measures have been implemented.


 

2. The Trust includes Mr. Raymond Matiba as Trustee, who is also the Chief Executive of the Alliance Group of Companies. He is an experienced Tour operator with a wealth of experience in the Tourism Industry, having being the former Chief Executive of KTB.

 

· The Trust consider including a Tourism expert as part of its’ governance and management structure.

 

· As it is a new venture TAC agreed with Management’s proposal that the development be phased, with the Tudor Creek developed as the base in year one and Masinga Dam developed as phase 2. It is anticipated by then; TARDA would have submitted their Business Plan for the Masinga Lodge.

The outcome of the study was the development of the Environmental Management Plan, which will be implemented by the Trust, as a mitigation measure.

 

Positive effects of the project were identified as employment, generation of income and other developmental benefits in the area.
