June 23rd 2008 was a significant day for Mt. Kenya Tourist Circuit Association (MKTCA) as it received funding of Ksh 9,210,000 to boost to their activities by TTF.MKTCA currently has four branches: Nyeri-Karatina, Embu-Kerugoya, Meru-Nyambene, and Nanyuki-Naro Moru-Timau.
The cheque and vehicle presentation was graced by the Minister of Tourism Hon. Najib Balala as well as the Minister for Gender and Children Affairs, Hon. Esther Murugi Mathenge, MP Nyeri Town.
Brief background.
NWCT is a community wildlife initiative managed by a board of trustees elected every three years and whose membership is made up of elders, local leaders and Donor representatives. NWCT was initiated with the support of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and KWS in 1995 to promote wildlife conservation and community development and it operates on 75,000 acres of land belonging to two group ranches namely Sarara and Sabache. The trust land incorporates most of the Mathews range, a high mountain range of up to 2,689 meters with unique Montane forest vegetation that provides refuge to wildlife particularly in the dry season.
Project Purpose / Objectives
· To upgrade and refurbish the facilities in Sarara Lodge so that it can appeal to a wider variety of high ended paying tourists, through improved services. The net result is increased profits to the partners in the business.
Proposed activities.
· Training of staff – 2 for KPSGA bronze accreditation and 1 as a masseuse and the rest in hospitality.
· Installation of camp hot water system, construction of junior staff accommodation, reconstruction of 2 transport containers for office and store, refurbishment of main lodge building and renovation of room tents, installation of solar filtration system for swimming pool and new kitchen equipment.
· Brochures, posters and CD’s.
· A fully re-furbished and renovated 12 bed luxury tented facility.
· A 6th Honey moon tent, fully furnished and equipped.
· A fully functioning solar powered system for the lodge.
· A fully functional website and developed marketing collateral and Cd’s for promotional purposes.
Training staff in hospitality, catering, guiding, health and beauty therapy.
Profile of promoters
NMCT is a community based organization representing the people of Sarara and Sabache group ranches located in the Mathews range region of Samburu District. The Lodge is owned by the NWCT including all assets that will be purchased by the grant and it is in partnership with Sarara Lodge Ltd, a private tour company which has a 10 year management agreement ( a lease was signed in June 2003) to manage the Sarara Lodge.
